For almost 80 years, the Mervis family has dedicated itself exclusively to diamonds and diamond jewelry, first in South Africa, and now from three locations in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. We sat down to talk with Jonathan Mervis, Chief Growth Officer with Mervis Diamond Importers, about what makes a diamond such a remarkable gift.
Why do you think diamonds hold such a fascination for people?
Diamonds are truly miracles of nature, as they are so incredibly rare to find. They were formed billions of years ago, many miles under the Earth’s surface under immense heat and pressure. Human culture has attributed value to diamonds because they’re so rare, because of the symbolism they hold, and because they last forever. When a person gives someone else a diamond, they’re essentially saying that they value the other person even more than the most precious substance on earth. That’s a powerful statement.
Your family has been in the diamond business a long time. Have you been involved your whole life?
I’ve been working with my family full time since graduating with my MBA in 2009. Before that I had worked in stints during college. But in some ways, I have been involved with the family business my whole life — 30 years. My dad or uncles would always tell us stories of interesting diamonds they came across, or about a fun couple that walked in the store that day.
Do you have a favorite story?
A few months ago I watched a news story about a local couple who had had a negative experience at another jewelry store in town, due to some dispute over what the couple received after paying for something they thought was different. Apparently the store in question was not as friendly in the process as the couple would have liked, and they were simply disappointed and without options.
I called up the news station and told them I wanted to help the couple, and that I would give them a gift card to our store to come shopping the following weekend on Mother’s Day. The station orchestrated a surprise delivery to the family: they invited them back to discuss their story, and while they were live on the air, they brought me onto the set to surprise them with my gift. I explained that I wanted give them a happy Mother’s Day, and the wife cried and told me that no one had ever done anything like that for her before. I love this story because we were able to bring so much joy to this one family.
After the story aired on local TV, we received some very warm emails from other viewers, telling us how much they were touched. Our business is really all about bringing happiness to our clients and helping them celebrate their love, marriage, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Sometimes we’re able to find unique ways to help couples celebrate, and these are special moments. I hope I have the chance to do more like this in the future.
